Change sucks: The Stages

#1: Comfort

Comfort…. Ahh the feeling. You’re in a job, you have a school schedule, maybe not a lot of money but enough, everything is going smoothly. Nothing jarring has happened. Plans are set and in place, routine is unveiling as it should and all is right in the world. Then bam. CHANGE. Whatever it is. New/break of relationships/friendships, new job, new pet, moving houses, health concerns, you name it, change sucks. We all kinda hate change don’t we? Even if the end result is positive. The road to get there is a bumpy one. Here is how it goes.

#2: Scatterbrained

You’re kinda running on fumes. You’re under rested, caffeinated on high, searching for answers, “What’s next”? The Scatterbrained stage can occur in one of two ways. An eerie, calm trying to figure it all out or it’s full-on hysterics. So you get your shit together and you start working. You look for new apartments, you book the next flight out, you find a rebound, you find a house, and get everything on track. It’s not all smooth sailing though, there’s detours and speed bumps and you just have to roll with the punches (and all those cliches I just incorporated).

#3: Panic and Strain

Things aren’t working out. Nothing is coming together like you planned. The Pinterest/vision board is not happening. In fact you’re plan to get life back on track is a total Pinterest fail.

You start to panic, you lose motivation to keep trying, then you hit a slump. A minor depression and it feels like it’s caving in. So you gotta stop drop and roll and keep pushin' on.

#4: Relief and Celebration

Change happens. You get the call. The positive news. Finally a light at the end of the tunnel. You got the job, or maybe the doctors appointment you have been on a waiting list for, Kijiji User 101 agrees to offer you a lease or the flights you were trying to book magically go on sale. All is finally coming to fruition. Halla-freaking-lujiah. And now you celebrate.

#6: The glow up

You made it. Change sucks but you got through it. So you revel in the newfound routine and champion your new position in life. Celebrate with a new outfit, go to an event that makes you happy, meet up with old friends and make new ones along the way. And ahh yes.. comfort at last…. For now.

I guess the greatest takeaway is change sucks, but we all go through it and we continue to experience it our whole life (yippee). But no matter how you experience and go through change, know that the glow up will arrive one day. Work hard, don’t quit, and in the famous words of a meme I saw on the internet: “Drink some coffee, listen to rap and get shit done” (or something like that).

Stay determined friends!

Mimi
